With Autumn upon us and the October half term on the horizon, many parents are wondering when do kids break up from school next?

Though it might have felt like the school summer holidays happened yesterday, there’s another school break coming up in October that both parents and kids will be grateful for.

It’s good to know that whilst the weather and temperature are a little cooler this time round, there’s still plenty of fun things to do with kids. We share the break-up dates for schools across the UK and plenty of ideas to help keep them busy.

When do kids break up from school?

In England and Wales, kids will break up from school on Friday 23 October for the October half term.

The half term lasts for one week (Mon-Sun), with kids in England returning to school on Monday 1 November.

Children in Scotland break up from school for their half term on Monday 11 October and don’t return until Monday 25 October 2021. Whilst schools in Northern Ireland break up for their mid term days on Thursday 28 October and Friday 29 October.

Things to do during October half term:

Whilst the weather might not be as bright (or warm) as the summer holidays, there’s still plenty of activities to do that ensure some quality time together. Be that a day out with the whole family or some free crafts to keep them busy at home.

With the spooky season upon us, why not make the most of some fun Halloween traditions like taking a family trip to a pumpkin patch in Essex. After picking up your perfect sized fruit, have a go at these brilliant painted pumpkin ideas that are sure to keep them busy for an hour or two. Plus there’s some fabulous Halloween crafts for kids and easy Halloween cupcake ideas to entertain them for an afternoon too.

Halloween aside – older children will love a day out to one of the UK’s best theme parks like Alton Towers or Thorpe Park. History buffs should explore some of the best UK castles, whilst animal lovers will love a trip to the zoo or local aquarium.

Of course, there’s plenty of fun still to be had when the weather does take a turn. Rainy day activities could include a trip to the bowling alley, soft play area or a cinema visit.

Those hoping to save the pennies or hide from the wet weather can also keep busy inside too. Host a mini junior bake-off competition with these easy kids baking recipes. Or let their creative juices flow by making tie dye t-shirts or trying out other easy crafts for children. Green-fingered parents can also rope the kids into gardening – whether that’s some simple watering or planting and weeding too.

Families looking to take a trip further afield should swat up on our regional Family Days Out guides too…
